Front Garden
For our clients, who were returning to Adelaide to retire, the brief was clear: a low-maintenance, visually stunning perennial garden that harmonizes with their classical villa. The design integrates heritage charm with modern functionality, blending seasonal beauty with practicality for effortless enjoyment.
The front garden highlights an existing old quince tree, preserved as a nod to the property’s history and charm. The space was reimagined to create an inviting entry for friends and family.
A sleek black aluminium blade fence with a new pedestrian gate introduces a modern contrast to the classical villa façade.

Visitors are guided from the gate across wide, rectangular steppers set within gravel. The gravel garden design features hardy perennials such as Salvia, Nepeta, and Euphorbia, their blooms spilling gently over the edges to soften the lines and bring colour throughout the seasons.
A raised garden bed of Cor-Ten steel, offsets the design, providing vertical interest. Within it, a deciduous ornamental tree, Cercis canadensis anchors the space, showcasing seasonal changes with its flowers, foliage, and structure.
Along the driveway, a row of espaliered lemon trees was planted. These provide evergreen screening, an edible feature, and a striking design element that adds to the villa’s timeless charm.
Back Garden
The back garden transforms into a serene and artistic retreat with spaces for both relaxation and functionality:
A permanent seating area crafted from red brick creates a warm, grounding space. Organic bluestone steppers set in crushed limestone surround the area, allowing rainwater to permeate and stay on site.
A granite boulder supports a sculptural centrepiece—a magnificent Monitor Lizard by Silvio Aponyi. The sculpture sits within a corner garden bed framed by ornamental grasses like Poa and perennials such as Gaura and Verbena bonariensis, which sway gently to complement the artwork.
A timber and steel rod trellis was installed, supporting espaliered fruit trees. This feature blends utility with artistry, offering seasonal fruits while creating a striking visual element.
Beyond the trellis, raised garden beds were designed for easy access and practical gardening. The sawdust paths between the beds provide a soft, natural surface, ensuring the area remains permeable and tranquil.
Surrounding the utility area, an Eleagnus ebbingei hedge offers privacy while perennial planting attracts birds, bees, and butterflies, enriching the garden's ecosystem.
A Shaderunner system spans the garden, providing adjustable shade and year-round protection. This ensures the garden remains usable and comfortable even during Adelaide’s hottest days.
This design balances classical elegance with contemporary touches, combining low-maintenance perennials, timeless materials, and practical features to create a garden that evolves beautifully throughout the seasons. It’s a space for our clients to enjoy their retirement while celebrating art, nature, and sustainable gardening.
