With a new addition to the house, the garden was designed to complement the modern architectural lines while introducing curves and softness for a harmonious balance. The client's vision—a lush, dry-heat tropical garden with ample lawn space and layered canopies—guided every element of this transformation.
The expansive lawn is a central feature, bordered by deep planting beds that host a variety of trees, creating a multi-layered canopy. Tall palms and drought-tolerant species, like Tuckeroo and Crepe Myrtle, provide the upper story, while mid-level shrubs and ground covers bring texture and colour. This layered approach evokes the desired tropical aesthetic, suitable for dry heat climates.
The garden responds to its varying microclimates. Sunny areas thrive with heat-loving plants like Bird of Paradise, arranged to frame the lawn while adding drama and structure.
In the cooler, shaded zones, species like Alpinia (Ginger) and Arthropodium (NZ Rock Lily) create a lush undergrowth, while smaller flowering plants provide subtle bursts of colour.
A tiled path greets visitors at the carport, transitioning seamlessly into steppers as it leads toward the lawn. This shift in finish softens the hardscape while maintaining a clean, organised aesthetic.
Practical spaces, including a shed and clothesline, were cleverly concealed with a star jasmine green screen and evergreen planting. Layered foliage ensures these areas are functional yet unobtrusive.
Organic-shaped bluestone steppers provide intuitive routes between the open garden and utility zones, blending practicality with visual softness.
Adjacent to the house, a contemporary BBQ area integrates seamlessly with the deck. Planting rills—a series of narrow, planted strips—break up the space and bring greenery to the hardscape, softening the overall look while echoing the curved theme.
This garden design strikes a perfect balance between function and beauty, creating an inviting, layered space that complements the new addition while meeting the client’s desire for a lush, tropical-inspired retreat.
