This thoughtfully designed and constructed garden seamlessly blends accessibility with aesthetic appeal, ensuring ease of movement while creating a serene outdoor retreat. Addressing the challenges of a sloping site, the design emphasizes functionality, visual interest, and connection to nature.
All areas of the garden are connected with gently ramped pathways, eliminating the need for steps. This approach not only enhances accessibility but also allows for effortless navigation for individuals with mobility concerns.
Paths were constructed with a crushed limestone base, offering a durable yet natural surface that aids in water permeability while complementing the garden’s design.
Organic-shaped bluestone steppers were incorporated into the paths to create visual rhythm and texture, softening the hardscape and blending seamlessly with the garden.
Terraced levels were created using Cor-Ten steel retaining walls. These not only manage the site’s slope but also define distinct garden zones, adding structure and a contemporary aesthetic. The terracing enhances privacy and provides shelter by creating pockets for planting.
A carefully chosen hedge acts as a green screen, offering privacy from neighbouring properties while adding texture and year-round greenery.
The garden features a mix of hardy native grasses and perennials, chosen for their low maintenance and seasonal interest. Varieties like Poa Eskdale and Anigozanthos (Kangaroo Paw) were combined with flowering perennials to attract pollinators.
Cercis canadensis (Forest Pansy): A standout ornamental tree provides seasonal beauty, with striking spring blossoms, vibrant summer foliage, and rich autumn tones. Positioned as a focal point, it enhances the garden's visual appeal year-round.
A centrally placed water bowl invites birds, bees, and butterflies, creating a dynamic, lively environment. This feature adds an element of tranquillity, and fosters a connection to nature.
This garden exemplifies the principles of aging in place, offering a safe, accessible, and visually appealing environment. By combining thoughtful hardscaping, terraced planting, and wildlife-friendly features, it ensures that beauty and functionality go hand in hand.
