Back Garden

Completed 2024
Landscape Design: Cathy Apps, Catnik Design Studio

In the creation of this new back garden, we envisioned two distinct zones that cater to different needs while maintaining a seamless flow throughout the space. Each area is designed not only for aesthetic appeal but also for functionality, allowing clients to engage with their surroundings comfortably.

The first zone, conveniently located just off a flat, serves as a private retreat. This intimate space is ideal for relaxation or quiet contemplation, offering a secluded area where one can unwind. The design incorporates strategic plantings and screening elements to ensure privacy from adjacent areas.

The larger garden area is designed as a versatile social space for sitting, relaxing, and visually enjoy the natural surroundings. This zone encourages movement and exploration, with pathways that guide visitors through a beautiful garden.

The incorporation of seating areas invites gatherings, while strategically placed planting beds invite discovery and appreciation of the diverse plant life.

A new shiplap fence not only delineates the two zones but also adds a contemporary touch to the garden. Complementing this, rainwater tanks are integrated into the design, promoting sustainability and responsible water management. The screening provided by the Magnolia Teddy Bear trees enhances privacy while adding layers of texture and colour throughout the seasons.

The garden showcases a combination of Crepe Myrtle shade trees, delightful perennials, and native plants, creating a diverse and vibrant ecosystem. These selections are designed to bloom in succession, ensuring year-round interest and beauty. The use of “old red” bricks for the pathways adds character and warmth, while planting rills, gravel, and crushed limestone provide a dynamic, textured landscape that encourages exploration and movement.

An innovative design element involves a gently curving mesh installation near the shed, which will eventually develop into a stunning curved “green wall” with star jasmine. This feature not only enhances vertical interest but also introduces a fragrant element, creating an enchanting sensory experience throughout the garden.

Overall, this garden is crafted to be soft and inviting, with a design that celebrates the beauty of each season. From the vibrant blooms of spring to the warm hues of autumn, this outdoor space will be a cherished retreat for years to come.
